Its extremely important to know what is going on with your electrical system and the principal tool to accomplish this is the correct instrumentation for the job. For AC systems you need to know the voltage and frequency being delivered, and it is very helpful to know your consumption to enable you to manage your loads. For DC systems you also need to know voltage and current but it also extremely important to be able to manage your battery capacity. In the past this has created great difficulties but fortunately these days the correct instrumentation is readily available at a reasonable cost.
